Essential Tools for Assembling "The Printable Watch"

Assembling your own 3D Printed Watch (TPW) requires attention to detail and a carefully selected set of tools to ensure a smooth and successful assembly process.

I am working on making some of these tools available as a printable part, I already have the movement holder and cover available under the downloads section.

Here's a comprehensive list of essential tools that will aid you in assembling your TPW timepiece:

  1. Precision Slotted Screwdriver: Essential for screwing back the case back securely, a precision slotted screwdriver ensures precise control and torque application, preventing damage to the screws and case. The ideal size screw driver is a 0.5 x 3mm slotted driver.
  2. Watchmaker's Finger Cots: These finger cots provide protection and dexterity during assembly, allowing you to handle small components with ease and precision without leaving fingerprints or oils behind.
  3. Sharp Craft Knife: Ideal for cleaning stringing and excess material from 3D prints, a sharp crafting knife ensures clean and precise finishing touches on your printed watch components.
  4. Clean Work Surface: A dedicated clean work surface provides a stable and organized space for assembly, reducing the risk of contamination and ensuring a pristine finish for your TPW.
  5. Watch Hand Setting Tools: Specialised tools for setting watch hands ensure accurate placement and alignment.
  6. Watchmaker's Clay and Sticks: Used for removing dust and debris from intricate watch components, watchmaker's clay and sticks provide a gentle yet effective cleaning solution, maintaining the integrity of your watch assembly.
  7. Air Blower: An air blower is invaluable for removing dust and debris from hard-to-reach areas of your watch components, ensuring a clean and pristine finish before final assembly.
  8. Vernier Calipers: Precision measurement is key in watchmaking, and vernier calipers provide accurate measurements for components such as stem length.
  9. Fine Wire Cutters: Essential for cutting the stem to the precise size required for your TPW assembly, fine wire cutters ensure clean and accurate cuts without damaging delicate thread.
  10. Loctite or Super Glue: For bonding the crown to the stem securely. I have used blue loctite so far but other superglues should work as well, use sparingly.
  11. Movement holder: Available to download, this is useful for holding the movement in place whilst the dial and hands are being set.

Optional Tools for Assembling "The Printable Watch"

In addition to the essential tools mentioned earlier, there are several optional tools that can enhance your experience and precision during the assembly of "The Printable Watch" (TPW). Here are some additional tools you may consider:

  1. Loupe: A loupe provides magnification and improved visibility, allowing you to inspect watch components with greater detail and accuracy. It's especially useful for examining small parts and ensuring precise alignment during assembly.
  2. Hand Remover: A hand remover tool facilitates the safe and easy removal of watch hands from the dial, minimizing the risk of damage to delicate components. While not essential, it can streamline the process of disassembling and reassembling your TPW.
  3. Timegrapher: A timegrapher is a sophisticated tool used to measure and analyze the accuracy of a watch's timekeeping performance. While not necessary for basic assembly, a timegrapher can be valuable for fine-tuning the movement and ensuring optimal performance of your TPW.

These optional tools can provide additional precision, convenience, and insight into the assembly process of your TPW. Depending on your preferences and level of expertise, you may choose to incorporate these tools into your assembly toolkit to further enhance your watchmaking experience.
